Despite the many differences between our clients, many of them wonder the same thing: Should we focus only on Google or create search engine optimization strategies for other search engines too?

SHOULD YOU ONLY DO SEO FOR GOOGLE?

What Search Engine Optimization Entails

Before you can decide on or dismiss the need for an additional strategy, you must first know what your primary strategy involves. Even a brief overview of what search engine optimization (SEO) encompasses will help you to better answer that important question. You’ll soon see why.

  • SEO is the process of improving a site so that it appears higher up and is, therefore, more visible in search results. That process encompasses several practices including link building, keyword research, content writing, website and link structure analysis, local optimization, and much more.
  • SEO is a complex process. That’s no surprise, though, when you consider the fact that search engines use upwards of 200 factors to rank websites. It only makes sense, then, that there would be many, many things in need of optimization to achieve good rankings.

The real question now is: How should these realities affect your strategy and focus?

Focus on SEO For Google First

Especially if you’re new to SEO, tackling it with Google in mind will be enough of a task for now. That should be your primary focus. Why? By far the most popular search engine, Google currently maintains nearly 90% of search engine market share worldwide. Without a doubt, optimizing mainly for Google will have the greatest impact on your business.

That’s not to say that you should forget about less powerful search engines such as Bing and Yahoo altogether. They do still have millions of users each, some of which may be a part of your target market. Plus, you never know what strides they might make in the near future so it would be best to have a considerable head start and presence already established.

So while your first order of business should be to rank well in Google’s search results, you’ll eventually want to put a plan in place to do the same on other search engines as well. Just make sure that you know what makes an effective strategy and have the time to do things right before you turn your attention to those other search engines. But what if search engine optimization is not your forte or you don’t have the time needed to optimize?
