Across LinkedIn and within marketing circles, content producers and other writers are expressing deep concern that AI-generated text is triggering a “race to the bottom.” But for those creating content that Google’s AI Overviews and platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity can readily interpret and potentially surface, it’s a race to the top. Literally. A race for greater visibility across both the SERPs and the evolving world of AI-driven discovery.
In a sea of noise, content expressing a distinct brand voice, deep expertise, original insights, and proprietary opinions stands out. And audiences are becoming more skilled at differentiating between unoriginal and derivative AI-generated “slop” and a fresher, more engaging, informative, and in many ways more entertaining reading experience. For this, they’ll stick around.
But we can’t kid ourselves. Machines are not rewarding great content with a standing ovation and deep appreciation. They’re trying to identify the clearest, most relevant information for the question at hand. This brings us to the technical side: the science behind the art of making a website “AI-friendly.” One technical tool that can support this work is schema markup.
At GoEpps, we are getting more requests to make websites “AI-ready.” Schema is proving helpful.
What Is Schema Markup?
Schema markup is the code added behind the scenes of a webpage to help search engines and AI systems understand more clearly what the page contains. It adds what you can think of as “labels” to your content. For example, without schema, Google might see your company’s name, location, business hours, and other basic information. The addition of schema helps search engines:
Better understand what the page contains.
Connect the business, author, services, locations, and content topics.
Interpret important facts without relying entirely on the prose.
Determine eligibility for certain enhanced search features, known as rich results.
For writers, the goal is to make a page’s facts, authorship, expertise, answers, and organization unmistakably clear. Schema reinforces these elements in a machine-readable format and can help connect the content to the people and organizations behind it.
Which Schema Markup Helps With AI Search?
Not every schema type is relevant to every business. The most useful markup accurately reflects the visible content on the page and clarifies information that search and AI systems might otherwise have to infer.
Three categories are especially worth considering.
FAQ Schema
FAQ schema identifies a series of Frequently Asked Questions and their corresponding answers. It tells machines, in very clear terms, “This is the question, and this is the answer.”
That structure supports the way people use search systems. Instead of entering a few disconnected keywords, they ask complete, specific questions and expect direct responses. A concise, self-contained answer marked with FAQ schema makes it easier for machines to identify and retrieve the relationship between the question and answer.
There are caveats to this process. Google now limits FAQ rich results primarily to authoritative health and government websites. FAQ schema also does not guarantee that an AI engine will quote or cite your answer. Google confirms that structured data is not required for its generative AI search features and that no special schema markup can secure inclusion. FAQ schema makes the relationship between a question and its answer explicit and machine-readable.
Organization and Person Schema
Who said it matters almost as much as what was said. Organization and Person schema help define the company, author, executive, or subject-matter expert behind the content. Properties such as “sameAs” can connect that entity to legitimate external profiles on platforms such as LinkedIn, Wikipedia, Wikidata, or Crunchbase.
These connections can help search systems distinguish your company or expert from others with similar names and associate content with the correct source. It’s not a tool for manufacturing authority. Instead, it strengthens the identity signals surrounding authority already earned through real credentials, experience, recognition, and consistently reliable content.
Article, HowTo, and Product Schema
These schema types tell machines what kind of content they are reading and provide important details about it.
Article schema can identify a named author along with publication and update dates, helping search systems understand who created the content and how current it is. HowTo schema clarifies a sequence of steps, although Google no longer displays HowTo rich results. Product schema can identify details such as price, availability, and qualifying ratings or reviews.
These details can support signals related to experience, expertise, authority, and trust (E-E-A-T). But schema does not create those qualities. An author name is meaningful only when a real author and relevant biography accompany it. A current date is useful only when the content has genuinely been reviewed. Ratings must be legitimate, visible, and appropriate for the page.
What Can’t Schema Markup Do?
Schema can clarify, but it can’t compensate. Like glasses vs. rose-colored glasses. It will not rescue thin content, establish expertise that does not exist, guarantee a rich result, or secure an AI citation. It also shouldn't describe information visitors can’t find on the page. The markup and visible content must align.
The strongest approach combines useful, original content with accurate technical signals that help machines interpret it. That’s what being “AI-ready” requires.
