The AI Search Landscape: How ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and More Are Changing Discovery

The AI Search Landscape How Chat GPT Gemini Perplexity Claude and More Are Changing Discovery

In today’s AI search landscape, brands would do well to take a page from Captain Kirk’s Kobayashi Maru playbook to win the game, because the rules of online discovery have changed, and traditional tactics aren’t enough anymore.

For two decades, brands paid for ads and optimized keywords to win clicks for their websites, but now AI search engines draw from multiple sources to answer consumer questions directly, often eliminating the need to click through to an external website.

At the same time, a citation inside an AI answer can now carry a kind of authority that once belonged almost exclusively to top rankings in the SERPs. In addition to being memorable, brands must now be referenced.

Why Is AI Search Visibility So Difficult to Measure and Achieve?

One challenge of measuring the shift to discovery in the AI era is that some AI-driven traffic can be hidden within unlabeled Direct traffic. GA4 now has an AI Assistant channel for identifying traffic from AI platforms, but when referral-source information isn't passed along, GA4 may categorize the visit as Direct instead. One recent analysis found that approximately 22% of clicks originating from Google's own AI Overviews were misclassified as Direct traffic rather than Organic Search. So, AI may be contributing more to brand discovery, website traffic, and conversions than your analytics are reporting.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and other AI platforms don't discover, evaluate, and present information in the same way, with different signals influencing which sources they retrieve and cite.

Research into nearly 17 million URLs cited by AI assistants has found differences in the age of the content they cite. For example, ChatGPT cited the freshest content on average, while Gemini and Perplexity also cited fresher pages than traditional Google search. Source preferences vary, too: Tinuiti’s Q1 2026 research found Reddit accounted for 24% of Perplexity citations in January 2026, compared with more than 5% for ChatGPT and just 0.1% for Gemini. That means there is no universal checklist for becoming "AI optimized."

The AI search market is also changing. ChatGPT remains the largest player, but its dominance has been shrinking. In the first quarter of 2026, Wix's AI Search Lab measured ChatGPT at 61.4% of worldwide AI search visits, followed by Gemini at 24.8% and Claude at 4%. BrightEdge, which measured AI referral traffic, found that Gemini's share of AI referral traffic nearly tripled from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026.

Finally, different platforms reach different audiences, so your buyer is an important variable. Someone researching software, comparing local services, or investigating a major B2B purchase may use different AI tools and ask very different kinds of questions. And you can’t be everywhere all at once (one marketing principle that hasn’t changed). Instead, identify the AI platforms your customers are most likely to use, research the questions they’re asking about your industry, and track which sources consistently appear in the answers. That's where your AEO strategy should begin.

How Do You Build an AEO Strategy That Earns AI Citations?

As we’ve said many times: SEO is dead; long live SEO. Good SEO still matters, but ranking in Google doesn't automatically make your company a source for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, or other AI systems.

One study of 15,000 prompts found that, on average, only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot also appeared in Google's top 10 results for the same prompt. Google's own AI Overviews have shown considerably more overlap with traditional search results, although that overlap has declined. This is why answer engine optimization (AEO) needs to become part of your overall search strategy.

The good news is that the fundamentals for creating authoritative content haven’t changed. What’s changed is how you make that authority clear to search and answer engines.

Google's guidance emphasizes content that demonstrates experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T), with trust at the center. That means publishing original, useful information; making authorship and expertise clear; backing claims with credible sources; keeping important information accurate and current; and giving readers something more valuable than a rewrite of what already exists online. A two-or three-sentence real-world example of how you solved a specific problem for a client is an effective way of demonstrating experience and earning trust.

For AI visibility, think beyond your own website. Build a consistent digital footprint where your customers look. Earn credible third-party mentions. Publish expert insights that other sources have reason to reference. Keep your business information accurate across the web. And structure important content so both people and machines can quickly understand what you know, what you offer, and why you can be trusted.

The goal is to establish authority across the search and answer engines your customers use, then make your expertise easy for those systems to find, understand, corroborate, and cite.
