Let’s get down to brass tacks on improving visibility in ChatGPT and what you can do to optimize your company’s eligibility for discovery, selection, citation, and recommendation.
Today, we cover everything.
This comprehensive guide reflects the best current guidance from OpenAI, available research, and what we’re seeing in practice, beginning with the facts on FAQs.
Publishing FAQs, adding appropriate schema, building an authentic presence on Reddit, and producing content AI systems can easily interpret may all support better visibility. However, no single technique can guarantee selection. Your brand must be accessible, discoverable, relevant, credible, and well represented across the web. SEO, AEO, and GEO all contribute to this process. SEO helps search systems find and understand public website content. Answer engine optimization (AEO) turns expertise into clear answers. Generative engine optimization (GEO) aims to increase the likelihood that platforms like ChatGPT can retrieve, use, and accurately represent those answers.
This guide focuses specifically on improving visibility in ChatGPT. Claude, Perplexity, Google AI features, and other answer engines each use their own discovery, retrieval, and citation processes, creating important differences marketers need to understand. Watch for our upcoming guides, where we’ll examine how to improve visibility on each platform.
Here’s the gist: Nobody outside OpenAI knows exactly how ChatGPT’s complete retrieval, ranking, and citation systems work. The same is true of other AI platforms: no one is publishing their full playbook. But OpenAI has confirmed several technical conditions that support eligibility for ChatGPT Search, while research and industry observation also show us what additional practices are useful.
Can ChatGPT Safely Access Your Website?
To be eligible to appear as a source in ChatGPT Search answers, make sure your website does not block OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that sites opting out of this crawler will not appear in ChatGPT Search answers, although they may still appear as navigational links.
OAI-SearchBot is separate from GPTBot, which crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s generative AI foundation models. A business can allow OAI-SearchBot for search visibility while blocking GPTBot if it doesn’t want its content potentially used for model training.
Notice we’re saying “public-facing.” Private systems, customer information, and other confidential content should remain protected and inaccessible to crawlers. Treat anything available on a public webpage as public information. This principle applies to all search systems, not just ChatGPT.
An SEO or AEO specialist can identify which public pages should be discoverable, while a web development, IT, or security team protects confidential areas through authentication and access controls. Review these settings periodically and especially after significant website changes. Don’t rely on robots.txt or noindex for security; they guide legitimate crawlers but don’t prevent unauthorized access.
Can ChatGPT Find the Information It Needs From Your Website?
Allowing the appropriate crawler access makes your public content eligible to appear as a source in ChatGPT Search, but ChatGPT must still locate a page that provides a relevant, useful answer to a user’s question.
As we’ve noted before, strong SEO foundations support that discovery process. Clear site architecture, descriptive page titles, logical internal links, accurate XML sitemaps, crawlable and indexable pages, and relevant backlinks can help search and retrieval systems discover your content and understand what your website covers. None guarantees a ChatGPT citation, but together they improve discoverability. Google’s SEO Starter Guide offers practical guidance on these foundations.
The role keywords play in content has evolved significantly. Beyond keyword research, expand into prompt research to understand the longer, more conversational questions customers are likely to ask a platform like ChatGPT. Identify likely questions through customer reviews, anonymized sales and support conversations, website search data, traditional search-query research, social listening, and reputable AI-visibility tools.
Research the questions customers ask about:
Comparisons and alternatives
Costs and risks
“Best” recommendations
Specific problems and use cases
Location-specific needs
Implementation requirements
Different stages of the buying process
As with keyword stuffing, filling a page with loosely connected questions will not produce useful content. Instead, group related questions by topic or customer intent and create substantive content around decisions your target customer is trying to make.
Why Would ChatGPT Select and Cite Your Content?
Once ChatGPT can discover your content, it must decide whether it's relevant and useful enough to answer a particular question. Selection and citation are not the same: a system may retrieve or use information without citing every page it consults. However, the qualities that support selection and citation overlap considerably. Available research suggests generative engines like ChatGPT are more likely to use content that is clear, specific, well supported, and closely aligned with the user’s question.
To strengthen your position within this process, focus on the following:
Provide a direct answer: State the key answer early, then add context and detail. Neither retrieval systems nor readers appreciate sifting through blocks of text to find your main point. This is where tight, concise marketing content pays off.
Include useful specifics: Definitions, costs, limitations, comparisons, requirements, examples, and clearly explained steps give ChatGPT more substantive material to work with.
Contribute original expertise: Firsthand observations, named-expert commentary, case examples, proprietary research, and lessons learned through real-life scenarios can distinguish your content from pages that merely summarize existing material.
Support factual claims: Link to reliable primary sources whenever possible to make it clear which source supports which claim.
Establish who is responsible for the information: Accurate bylines, author bios, credentials, editorial policies, and complete About and Contact pages help readers better evaluate your content.
Keep important information current: Review pages containing prices, regulations, product details, service areas, statistics, and time-sensitive recommendations.
Displaying an updated date matters only if you've truly reviewed or revised the content.
Make the page easy to interpret. Descriptive headings, focused sections, concise paragraphs, lists, tables, and clearly labeled comparisons can make complex information easier for both people and machines to understand.
A foundational GEO study reveals that tactics such as adding credible citations, relevant quotations, and supporting statistics could increase content visibility in the generative engines tested. It doesn’t offer a universal formula that works equally well for every business or question, but it does reinforce the value of substantive, evidence-supported content rather than simply repeating information already available.
Why Does Your Reputation Across the Web Matter?
ChatGPT may consult independent sources when discussing or recommending a company, making AI visibility partly an exercise in PR. This means your company’s information must be consistent across reputable publications, directories, associations, partner sites, review platforms, and relevant communities. Your services, locations, leadership, qualifications, and expertise should appear accurately wherever your brand shows up. We explore this further in our blog titled “What Mistakes Are Costing Companies Their AI Visibility?”
Independent mentions can link your company to specific expertise. A law firm seeking visibility for employment-law questions should be credibly discussed in that context rather than merely calling itself a “full-service firm.” Backlinks, media coverage, reviews, and directory profiles may support discovery and corroboration, although OpenAI has not confirmed them as direct ChatGPT ranking factors.
Encourage genuine customer reviews, respond constructively, and publish only business and employee information intended for public use. Unnecessary personal details can increase exposure to spam, impersonation, and phishing schemes.
How Do You Measure Visibility in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT does not have stable numbered rankings. Answers can change based on the prompt’s wording, context, location, timing, and other variables. Test a representative set of non-confidential customer questions and record whether your brand is mentioned, accurately described, cited, or recommended. Repeat tests over time for more reliable data.
Track these outcomes separately, along with identifiable referral traffic and conversions. OpenAI’s current guidance states that links from ChatGPT Search automatically include “utm_source=chatgpt.com,” helping analytics platforms identify those visits. Still, referral data can’t capture ChatGPT’s full influence. A customer may see your company without clicking, then return through search, direct traffic, or another channel. Other AI platforms may pass referral information differently. Treat recorded referrals as one indicator, not the be-all and end-all.
As we explain in our recent exploration of the evolving AI Search landscape, AI may contribute more to discovery and conversions than analytics alone can show.
Finally, examine which sources ChatGPT cites. Trade publications may reveal a digital PR opportunity, competitor pages may indicate a content gap, and directories may signal the need for more accurate or complete listings. The objective isn’t to count mentions, but to understand what may be influencing them and what your company should improve next.
The IAB’s 2026 AI-visibility measurement framework similarly recommends assessing presence, prominence, portrayal, and persuasion while distinguishing directional data from measurement rigorous enough to guide major decisions.
Ryan Lannum, GEO/SEO and technical specialist here at GoEpps, notes, “Improving visibility in ChatGPT isn’t about implementing one tactic and watching your ranking rise. It requires understanding where a brand is appearing, which sources are influencing the answers, and what credibility or content gaps may be keeping it out of the conversation.”
Where Should Your Business Begin?
You don’t need to implement everything we’ve covered at once. Instead, follow these steps:
Confirm that legitimate crawlers can access intended public pages without weakening security around private areas.
Fix technical SEO and outdated or contradictory information.
Identify the questions that influence customer decisions without exposing confidential data.
Publish complete, direct answers supported by approved evidence.
Add expert insight and firsthand experience suitable for public disclosure.
Strengthen authoritative third-party mentions, reviews, and profiles.
Track how ChatGPT describes the brand using safe, non-confidential prompts.
Most importantly, make your experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness accessible, understandable, useful, and verifiable.
At GoEpps, we bring the technical, content, authority, and measurement pieces together with AEO by GoEpps.
